Monash University PhD student Siyuan Yan has been named International Student of the Year – Research at the Victorian International Education Awards, recognising the impact of his doctoral research in medical artificial intelligence.
Siyuan’s research focuses on improving melanoma detection by combining AI with clinical dermatology.
His research contributes to a broader framework for the responsible use of medical AI globally, including the development of Derm1M, an open-source dataset supporting advanced dermatological AI research. Siyuan’s work has been published in leading academic journals and has attracted attention from more than 70 Australian and international media outlets.
Alongside his research, Siyuan mentors early-career researchers at Monash University, providing guidance on publishing and research ethics, and regularly presents his work at academic and public forums.
The award recognises Siyuan’s commitment to translational research that connects technical innovation with real-world healthcare outcomes in Victoria and beyond. Congratulations!
